By Martin Auer, Head Greenkeeper at the Haugschlag Golf Resort: »Strength lies in tranquillity«
I’m originally from Styria and, in 2002, made the switch from carpentry to greenkeeping because I was extremely interested in turf and course maintenance. In 2011, I moved to the Waldviertel with my family and have been working as Head Greenkeeper in Haugschlag ever since.
What makes us special is that we have two championship courses, each of which is completely different. The Old Course Waldviertel is something quite special thanks to the way it is nestled within the landscape: the tranquillity, the mystique of the Waldviertel, the natural surroundings and the granite boulders peeking out of the ground everywhere. The newer Haugschlag course is designed to be more challenging and offers a final highlight in the form of its island green right in front of the hotel terrace. What makes the resort as a whole so special is that the hotel is situated right between the courses; you don’t need a car, everything is within easy reach, and you can really enjoy this freedom, tranquillity and nature.
My personal passion is fast greens – that’s very much my calling card. What’s more, we’re constantly striving to improve in all areas, and that’s where the Leading Mystery Tests are vital: anonymous testers of all ability levels often spot things that, over time, you stop noticing yourself simply out of habit. This honest feedback helps us fine-tune our game throughout the year and continuously improve our standards.
With sporty greetings!
